When to Wear Black Tights

When to Wear Black Tights

It’s probably the most ask question about tights after the summer “When is it time to get black tights and opaques out of the closet?”  Fashionista’s will either say “NEVER!” or for the more pragmatic then the rule is the same for black tights as for oysters: only when there is an R in the month!

It’s not as simple as that.

The proponents of “Never in a month of Sundays” - New York click-clackers who go barelegged all year round are not an urban myth. Even when it’s so cold you wouldn’t go outside without a 25 tog duvet (otherwise known as a puffer coat – another fashion no-no in certain circles) wrapped round you, there are women in New York bearing their sunkissed tan legs to the elements as if they are some how immune to the cold.

The black-tights question is, to a certain extent, about comfort.  And what level of comfort you need!  Going bare-legged indicated that you do not have to cope with public transport or walking (usually accompanied by shoes designed to be worshiped not actually walked in).  Bare legs are de-rigueur on the Red Carpet for example.  But none of the starts have walked or caught the bus to work that day – they bare all for a 5-6 minute sufferage from the limo to the entrance to the event they are attending.

I agree with a fashion editor who recently pointed out that zero-tolerance of tights is only not annoying if you are a diehard fashionista, the type that wears strange trouser shapes and weird shoes and goofball jewellery.

The black-tights separates fashion as actually lived by actual human beings from fashion as seen on models. Like umbrellas, or bags bulging with trainers and scarves and Kindles, black tights are omnipresent in the real world when there is an R in the month, but remain largely invisible in fashion editorial.  Your willingness to go barelegged shows the degree of pain you are prepared to tolerate in order to achieve the “right” look.

It is also an age issue, too, because bare legs are a youthful look, so by going bare-legged you show the world that you do not believe yourself to be too old.  And whilst thanks to fake tan, means having brown legs no longer means multiple holidays a year. Smooth tan legs can be attainable year round as long as accompanied by a fairly rigid grooming regime - having the time to devote to this is a luxury many struggle to find.
