The Ultimate Guide to Wearing Stay Ups and Tights

Bare Legs? - Only in NYC

There has been a couple of decades now where the bright young things of New York City do not wear tights – even in the depths of winter.  Thanks to Kate Middleton, here in the UK and many other countries that keep her on fashion watch, tights and stockings are making a comeback – especially nude tights.  I was reliably informed by a stalwart of the hosiery industry that there is a 7-year cycle and we are on the latest up-swing right now!

tights in winter - no bare legs here!

Tights are a great way of staying warm, especially since opaque tights these days are lighter on your legs and won’t look like the woollen ones you used to wear for school!  Frostbite isn’t worth being trendy.  You can even buy thermal tights that hold in heat and keep you warm.

Does Denier Matter?

If you are thinking skin tone then quality is an absolute must, otherwise you will end up with legs that look like they belong to a farmhouse kitchen table!  The finer the denier the more invisible they are likely to be as long a you match the skin tone.  10 denier natural tan seamless tights from Divine Legs suit skins tones from pale to light tan without looking unnatural.  Their 20 denier powder tights and stay-ups are great for very pale skin tones.

 tights on different celebrity legs

Black tights and stay-ups in sheer are classic and suit all skin tones, and body shapes.  The more sheer, the lighter the colour coverage.  10 denier seamless being the lightest coverage in the Divine Legs range.  20 denier gives a slightly denser coverage without added weight and will cover small blemishes and cover uneven skin tone.  50 denier is semi opaque and great if you are not looking for a complete elimination of your skin’s warmth coming through.  60 and 70 denier are a denser black and give your legs a full coverage.

What About Colour?

coloured tightsWhen it comes to bright colours stick to opaque tights, they are currently very trendy.  To choose colour, consider what the predominant colour in your wardrobe is and use complementary colours in your hosiery OR with caution, go for a complete contract.  Darker and richer colours will disguise thicker short legs.  And always give consideration to your footwear – bright tights can be great for creating a bold statement but too many bold colours will clash and you don’t want to look like a clown!

The No-No List

1.  Never wear skin tone opaque tights (EVER!)

opaque nude tights - a no-no!

2.  Open-Toe Shoes and tights – it a look reserved for Strictly Come Dancing and hipsters.  For more corporate work environments, put your open toed summer shoes away until the weather gets warmer.

3.  Black Tights and Colored shoes - Not unless you want to look like Minnie Mouse, though colored tights with black shoes is OK if the colour is right.

4.  Striped or Pure White Stockings are strictly an under 12’s.

5.  Lace Stockings are definitely not for work, though there are some great patterns around these days – take a spare pair to work and change into them for going out after work to completely change your outfit.  Fishnets have become more acceptable at work as long as the net size is small.

The final word.....

All said and done, what you wear and how you wear it is a matter of personal choice and if you are wearing something you feel comfortable in then go for whatever your personal style is.  It's fact of daily life that we will both judge and be judged by other people (we can't help it, it is human nature) - so be confident in what you wear and your personal style.  As Dr Seuss once said (and he was a very wise man) "Those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind!
