4 Top Tips for Looking After Your Tights!

black tights - laddered

You know that sinking feeling when you are about to go into an important meeting, interview or presentation, where it’s really essential that you make a great impression – then one snag on a chair or desk and you’ve got a dirty great ladder in your tights!  Agghhhhh….

Or worse still, you’ve pushed the boat out and bought a great pair of expensive tights – and you’ve just put your finger through them as you are putting them on!  Even bigger AAGGGHHHH.....

Here at Divine Legs we've seen it all when it comes to hosiery so here are 4 simple tips to getting more out of your tights (and not a hosiery glove in sight!!)

1.  It starts with your hands!

hand care for hosiery

Most pulls and ladders happen because you have a ring, jagged nail or rough skin on your hands.  Take jewellery off when putting hosiery on. Keep nails filed smooth and moisturise your hands regularly. HOT TIP: Take your jewellery off; put a teaspoon of table salt and a teaspoon of olive oil (or any cooking oil) into your palm and dry wash your hands with the mixture for a really easy, quick hand scrub.  This smooths your hands, improved your circulation and moisturises them all in one go.

2.  Don’t forget your feet.

Rough skin on your feet will gradually wear the tights out from friction.  Look after your feet using the salt and oil scrub from above and treat your feet to a dab of foot or body lotion at night time.  For the dedicated, smooth a thin layer of Vaseline on your feet at night and wear a pair of socks as a weekly “mask”.

3.  Put tights and stockings on properly!

putting on hosiery properly

This might sound like common sense but most rips happen because the hosiery is being pulled up rather than rolled up.  Put your hands into the entire length of the leg of the hosiery and “roll” up the leg rather than putting your foot in and pulling up.  Undressing is in reverse – roll them off, don’t pull them off.

4.  Follow the washing instructions.

Now most tights seem to require hand washing by virgin maidens and gentle drying in a Mediterranean sun (or some equally time consuming equivalent) and who has time for that!  Divine Legs hosiery can all be washed in the washing machine at 40°.  Its best to wash them in a hosiery wash bag as this avoids getting tangled in your washing or snagged on bra hooks.  We can recommend an excellent hosiery laundry bag at Hold Tightly.

And there you have it!  The truly dedicated can buy “hosiery gloves” to put on your hosiery but we know that not many of you will have the time for that in the morning.  However if you were to buy the worlds most expensive tights at £700, (created by Hedi Slimane at Saint Laurent, see picture above) you probably won’t quibble about buying gloves – and you won’t be worried about being in a rush!
