Call on the masses or call on yourself to help forge a better working world - a more inclusive, gender equal world

If you don't know about International Women's Day (IWD) then let me introduce you to the journey of women around the world that started over 100 years ago.

International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

Since the early 1900's Women's Day has been a collective day of celebration and a call for gender parity. Triggered by oppression and inequality in 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights.  This spurred women in other countries to become more vocal and active in campaigning for change. Not controlled by governments, corporations, academic institutions, the media, the annual IWD celebration belongs to the women (and men) who care about human rights. International Women's Day is all about unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy and action - whatever that looks like globally at a local level. And it continue's to grow from strength to strength.

You can read the entire condensed history of IWD on the excellent website  - Click here

So what difference can you make?

Eleanor Roosevelt quote IWD 8th March

Every person regardless of gender can take part in the drive better outcomes for women - we can all be responsive and responsible for creating a more gender inclusive world. The World Economic Forum predicts the gender gap won't close entirely until 2186.  It's guaranteed that we won't see it our life times.  The suffragettes knew that they too would not see the benefits of their struggles in their own lifetimes and that they were fighting for the progress of future generations.

International Women's Day (IWD) on March 8 as an opportunity to take some action, no matter how small the steps.  Celebrate the positive achievements of women  to generate awareness across all generations what success looks like to different people.  Take bold actions, create awareness of the benefits of gender parity.  Check out the resources at the IWD website.

#Be Inspired

In 2016, Google created the short video below to highlight the dreams and aspirations women around the world.  (Apologies if you get an Ad in front, I have tried to block it!).

It was quite a feat, with 13 cities (San Francisco, Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City, Lagos, Moscow, Cairo, Berlin, London, Paris, Jakarta, Bangkok, New Delhi and Tokyo) and 337 women sharing their goals, which varied from "swimming with pigs in the Bahamas" to "giving a voice to those girls who can’t speak".  #OneDayIWill.

Check out this article in the Telegraph for more video content (or find them on YouTube).

We cannot succeed if half of us are held back - IWD 8th March

Women have come a long way - but there's a long way to go and it's not just for women, it's a journey for all mankind.
